Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Gerona Robredo was initially known to the public as the widow of the late Jesse Robredo – the beloved Mayor of Naga City and former Secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government.
A staunch advocate of human rights, she devoted her entire professional life in the service of the most vulnerable sectors of Philippine society.
She served as a Public Attorney and is a member of the alternative lawyers group SALIGAN. After winning a seat in the Sixteenth Congress, she remained constant in her priority attention to farmers and fisherfolk; women, particularly in oppressive circumstances; and indigenous people.
On October 5, 2015, she accepted the challenge to run for the Vice Presidency and from one percent, her survey ratings climbed consistently thanks to her advocacy-driven campaign.
After winning the vice presidency, she was appointed as the 11th Chairperson of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC).
Aside from HUDCC, she is also the Chairperson of the Board of the Home Development Mutual Fund (Pag-IBIG Fund), Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board (HLURB), National Housing Authority (NHA), National Home Mortgage Finance Corporation (NHMFC), and Social Housing Finance Corporation (SHFC); and Vice Chairperson of the Board of the Home Guaranty Corporation (HGC).
“Why would I run? It’s really a sense of mission, because I realized I have bigger obligations than myself”
Leni Robredo remains one and the same person in her various dimensions as public servant, advocate, public defender, and mother. She is a nation-builder concentrating on the fundamentals: the grassroots, women and children, and the poor.
