Amid new controversies over drug war, VP Leni urges policemen: ‘Don’t let rogue cops ruin PNP’s reputation’

Vice President Leni Robredo on Sunday called on members of the Philippine National Police to help uphold the integrity of their institution, in the wake of the murders of several young people, supposedly in the course of the administration’s “war on drugs.”

In her weekly radio show, “BISErbisyong LENI,” on RMN-DZXL 558, VP Leni reiterated her belief that there are more cops intent on fulfilling their duties.

Kaya nananawagan tayo sa kanila na tulungan tayong isalba iyong institusyon ng kapulisan,” said the Vice President, whose late husband, Jesse, introduced reforms for the benefit of the policemen during his stint as Interior secretary.

The Vice President made the call when asked to comment on President Rodrigo Duterte’s claim that the recent string of teenage killings was meant to “sabotage” his administration’s war against drugs.

VP Leni raised doubts over such suspicions. She then noted that while she agrees that the country has a drug problem, violence and killings do not make for a proper “strategy” in this regard.

Iyon iyong nakakatakot,” she added.

The Vice President has previously called on the administration to “rethink” its approach in its anti-drug campaign. She consistently insisted on the observance of due process, and pushed for the adoption of another strategy, such as community-based rehabilitation, which applies to most drug surrenderees.
