VP Leni assured by AFP chief: No support for revolutionary gov’t

08 November 2017
Newly-installed Armed Forces chief of staff Lt. Gen. Rey Leonardo Guerrero has assured Vice President Leni Robredo that the military, under his leadership, will not support moves to establish a revolutionary government.
The said assurance was given on Wednesday afternoon, during the AFP’s security briefing for the Vice President at the Philippine Air Force headquarters in Pasay City.
Here, VP Leni asked Guerrero and Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana where they stand amid said rumors. She noted that such talks are “dangerous,” given that they are being floated by some supporters of the President, with the apparent backing of some appointed officials.
She said the new AFP chief and the Defense secretary gave their word that they will not support such efforts.
VP Leni thanked the officials for their assurance, reiterating that the public is looking at them to defend the country’s democracy.
The Vice President also said that the AFP gave her a “very comprehensive” briefing on the security situation in the country, including that in Marawi City, the center of the 153-day siege started by the Maute local terror group.
After its relief efforts for affected communities in Marawi, VP Leni’s office is looking to assist in rehabilitation efforts in the city, under its Angat Buhay anti-poverty program.
